Choosing to love through the pain

Ephesians 5:2 NLT

“Live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.   He loved us and offered himself as a sacrifice for us, a pleasing aroma to God.”

We have had an interesting and different winter this year in Saskatoon:  it’s either been really cold or somewhat melting, which has made for some icy moments on my driveway. A few weeks ago, I was very carefully walking to my car and had just about made it when I slipped and fell on the hard, lumpy ice.  Ouch!

As I lay on the ice crying and groaning in pain, my dog came to rescue me by licking my face.  Of course, that encouraged me upwards; I was already sore and I didn’t want her dog breath all over me too. I spent many days feeling the effects of the fall, which included a trip to Denver.  During some free time, I planned to go to a mall about 8 – 10 blocks away and decided to walk.  I was definitely in a lot of pain but knew that it would be better to keep moving rather than just sit.  The walk was gorgeous – a park area along a creek with a lovely wooden bridge crossing over the creek just before the mall.  I have to say that although beautiful it seemed like the longest walk I had ever taken!  I was very sore but I was excited to get to shop for an hour!

So often in life, pain can stop us from doing what we want or intend to do yet we know that it doesn’t have to be that way. This verse in Ephesians encourages us to live a life filled with love, following the example of Christ.  Jesus is such an amazing example for us – he gave, even when it cost him everything! To live a life filled with love means that we choose to love even when it isn’t convenient or easy for us.

This week, let’s walk in love towards those we connect with even when there is pain involved, remembering the journey God leads us on is filled with beauty and adventure and worth every moment! Enjoy!
