You are a masterpiece

Ephesians 2:10 NLT

“For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.”

God created so much diversity of beauty in the earth and put as much detail and skill into creating you and I!  So often we compare ourselves to others instead of valuing our uniqueness created for God purposes.

On a trip to the Sierra Nevada area of California I saw some Sequoia trees and was overwhelmed at their beauty. They are massive: their diameter is 20 to 26 feet with a height of up to 300 feet. It’s awe inspiring to stand among them, as they are absolutely majestic!  I determined to find a Sequoia cone among many other species of cones on the forest floor. I was sure the cone would be large and very distinct, but I was so wrong!  Many of the cones I found were gorgeous in color, shape and size but the Sequoia cone seemed small and very ordinary looking by comparison.  That small cone taught me a great lesson about how to view my life as God’s masterpiece.

Contrary to appearance, our form doesn’t limit God’s seeds of purpose in us.  God nourishes us as we embrace the beauty of his design and we grow up in Him.  The Sequoia needs so much water and their roots grow outward looking for a source meanwhile providing a large base of support for their growth.  We discover by engaging in the opportunities and connections God brings that we can make the best of the conditions around us and have support for growth just like a Sequoia does! The Sequoia cone is almost unbreakable protection for the seed, it is only released 3 very unappealing ways: by fire, by insects that bore through the cone and a particular squirrel that eats and expels the contents causing the seed to get planted and begins to grow.  When life is difficult, a seed gets released causing a growth cycle upward into God’s wide, open possibilities for our lives. Remember you are a masterpiece and God’s plans for you are beyond comparison!
